The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame just announced this week its newest slate of upcoming inductees. Though many are happy with many of its selections like Depeche Mode, not all of the choices made sense. Further, some musicians who were denied this prestigious honor deserve to be in. Though not everyone will agree on these inductions, there is buzz in the air about them. People are talking about music, talented artists, and greatness. The music industry is rightfully shining a light on itself. This is what is missing for the world of books.
When we heard of the star performers being inducted, we can't but help wonder when the day will come when a press conference is called to announce the first inductees into Book Publishing Hall of Fame.
Up until now, to this very day, an organization dedicated to honoring the best of the book industry, educating people about the power of books, highlighting great authors of all-time, and providing a platform for the book community to exchange ideas on what Book Publishing Hall of Fame should be was just a dream. It was no more a reality than the plot in a Stephen King thriller.
That has now changed.
Today, Book Publishing Hall of Fame has been launched. It will take shape over the coming months and years, hopefully becoming a home for celebrating all things books and those who help make them special.
Right now, there is no building, no museum display, no academy of voters, or any of the things you typically identify a traditional hall of fame with.
This is day one, a moment an idea gets advanced and put into a blog, then a web site, then a community, then into books… and who knows what. Each of us shall help decide the fate of Book Publishing Hall of Fame.
The evidence is clear that such an organization should exist. There are hundreds of major halls of fame in America. Some of them represent huge aspects of our lives, ones that honor our sports, hobbies, music, and industries. Not one serves the book industry in a comprehensive way.
We all have heard of The Baseball Hall of Fame, The National Toy Hall of Fame, and The Country Music Hall of Fame. But there are also some unique ones that are not as well known, such as The Circus Hall of Fame, Automotive Hall of Fame, Robot Hall of Fame, Poker Hall of Fame, and the National Radio Hall of Fame. Did you know there is a Burlesque Hall of Fame and a Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame?
Each of these halls, like Book Publishing Hall of Fame, share common traits, paying tribute to something so many people feel passionate about. Society wants to preserve its culture and history, and to honor the powerful, the popular, the odd, and the important of each significant aspect of our lives.
Well, books are very important to us and have been around for a very, very long time. If we want to identify, preserve, and promote certain books, people, and values, we need a hall of fame.
Of course questions abound, including:
Who should be inducted?
Based on which standards or metrics?
What should a hall of fame consist of?
What parts of the book world and publishing industry should be preserved and recognized?
How can we put books and writers into a context or perspective that’s meaningful and fun?
How do we help celebrate the ability of books to inform, enlighten, inspire, and entertain us?
Can Book Publishing Hall of Fame unite the book world, advocate for books, promote free speech, and expand literacy rates?
Together we shall come up with the answers – and raise more questions as well. We shall take an idea and put it to paper and screen – and maybe one day into the physical world. Just as books help us dream and see worlds that do not exist, Book Publishing Hall of Fame is writing its story, one page and volume at a time, taking us all on an adventure. The ending has not yet been written.
There are many organizations, companies, and individuals who collectively make up the book industry, from libraries and bookstores to publishers and writers. We want to bring them together to rally around what we all care deeply about: Books!
Tens of thousands of people work in the book world – and hundreds of millions are touched by it. Today, they get a voice in honoring, promoting, and enjoying all that books offer us. Behold, the birth of The Book Publishing Hall of Fame!
